Located in the west metro area, this fine dining establishment welcomes guests with an array of good things ­ sizzling shrimp and tuna tartare appetizers and pistachio-crusted pork chops and grilled duck breast entrees, to name but a few. White linen-topped tables, an open kitchen, floor-to-ceiling windows, and brightly colored artwork make for an inviting space you're sure to enjoy. UPTOWN. Chefs at Aix make sure that fresh ingredients are always at the forefront. They don't cover up good things with a heavy hand or too much spice or sauce. Vibrant flavors shine through with every bite of the American-French cuisine. Braised duck confit cassoulet and wild mushroom-stuffed quail wonderfully represent the menu, which also includes steaks, veal, duck, and pastas. A carefully chosen French wine list and a dessert menu complement entrees.

SOUTH DENVER. Chefs in training get a chance to prove their mettle at Assignments, which is affiliated with The Art Institute of Colorado. Regulars agree that the food is first-class and that culinary students really love what they do. Gourmet sandwiches and salads can be had, along with meat and seafood entrees. A la carte and prix fixe dining options are both available, as is catering. Reservations accepted. The restaurant is closed during school breaks and operates on an abbreviated schedule during summer months, so it's best to call ahead.

HIGHLANDS. Bang! packs a savory punch with its Southern-style meals. Protocol is to order at the counter and fetch your own silverware and condiments (thank goodness the prices make this self-service worthwhile!). Expect to choose from a selection of homegrown favorites like roast chicken, meatloaf and pasta. Very popular, especially on weekend evenings. Outdoor dining available.
